In defense about Boruto Anime and it's Canonity status
Boruto -Naruto Next Generation- is the direct sequel to the NARUTO Series, its manga series released at 2016 on Weekly Shonen Jump (and it moved to VJUMP at the end of July 2019) as it consists with 11 Volumes while the twelfth Volume will be release on 4 September 2020, as the story will featured Boruto Uzumaki's story which it started at the event of BORUTO -Naruto the Movie- which adapted into manga as Versus Momoshiki Arc.
Its anime version broadcasted on 5 April 2017 and the story starts differently or should I say set earlier before the event of Versus Momoshiki Arc, as it starts with Anime-Original story set in Academy days, and it praised for not just developing returning and new characters or even how Anime Arc brings the valid development to Boruto story with introduction brand-new characters and development (Sumire, Denki, and Iwabe for example), but it also how they handling the manga adaptation into such a being top-notch as they deepening the story, extend, expand, and how they developed something that were never even added into anime.
Although the Anime-Original Arc and Manga story adaptation arc, including Novel adaptation praised how it redeveloped the story and characters along with extending the plot and lore, the anime also severely criticized for its animation flaws, transitional quality episode (Although it's still good), and how the most people kept calling the anime as a bad adaptation, not just because of quality, but it's about how they put filler episode and continue being developed by Studio Pierrot, it also how the anime original characters like Iwabe, Sumire, Denki, and anyone else, including Anime arc didn't have irrelevancy to the future story and wanting to kept the story from the manga without a change or anything.
BUT, that's not true, there are most people who didn't know why Boruto Anime is legitimately and canon to the manga story and its anime story, but first I will tell you why they think Anime-Original Story Arc is a filler by many fandoms.
Anime-Original Arc is a story arc that was never even happened in the manga story or didn't even written or supervised by Author and so fans considered the Anime-Original Arc as a filler, the same goes for filler episode, as it exist to filling the story of anime and giving the authors time to produced more chapter to adapt.
While Sumire is in work as Scientific Ninja Research, she placed by Tsubaki Kurogane as the new member of Team 15, despite how their situation differs from how they with Sumire, but it purposely maintain a new dynamic team development for them, while Tsubaki would be a first samurai character to be a member of Team 15, she's also become canon to the Boruto story following Sumire's departure for scientific research team.
Original-Anime Arc is not just focus on developing the major character and support characters, but it also brings a great tease for what's it already set in motion in the manga, for example how at the end of Jugo Arc teasing for Sumire leaving for her new job as Scientific Research Department, The Mysterious doctor who appeared in Mitsuki Arc which seems came from outsider (as his dead body were never even found) which tease for something that the manga and anime fans already knew, while Boruto's ability Jougan which it used for him, with teasing Momoshiki and Kinshiki at the end of Academy Arc, there are still more things that connected to the manga stories.
It all connected between Anime and Manga story thanks to the direct involvement and supervising story by Ukyo Kodachi, which there are several fans and viewers who can enjoy the story Boruto not just in the manga but in the anime as well which experience his story more widely.
It's the first time for manga readers fans that story of manga would adapt with superior extended version as it help to introduce the story arc in a better view, while expand the story in fully depth and increased the volume story, with better emotional which never even drawn much in the manga, but it's also with Kodachi who handling the episodes of story adaptation along with anime staff.
So I hope this page will somehow change their minds slowly and steadily while waiting for the next chapter of BORUTO, and as the anime reaches the manga story arc, it would interest for us to enjoy all meat of Boruto content.

WHAT'S ANIME-ORIGINAL ARC? and WHY FANS CALLED IT FILLER?
What's Filler and Anime-Original Arc? |
Anime-Original Arc is a story arc that was never even happened in the manga story or didn't even written or supervised by Author and so fans considered the Anime-Original Arc as a filler, the same goes for filler episode, as it exist to filling the story of anime and giving the authors time to produced more chapter to adapt.
Anime-Original Arc is having a mixed reception, same as how filler episode was. The positive way is how it expands the story arc for character development, filled the little panel that only had little important to the storyline, and also creating a moment as Fan-Service (Not about beach or hot scene, it's about character interaction and character spotlight what I'm talking about).
The negative way is how they think Anime-Original Arc same as filler and how they handling the story with fear with no supervision or a little source material would hurt the story progression and contain a randomly unnesseccary plot to the story.
Every manga readers and anime watchers prefer manga story because how manga authors put their passion, experience, theme, story concept, character, inspirational, reference, and more which is how they really appreciate their hard work, especially when it comes weekly.
But Anime Arc story and Filler Episode written by many anime screenwriters and fans had traumatic fear how filler episodes is the story were not in manga along with how inconsistency, irrelevant, and nonsensical plot could be with no story progression, because most of its progression are only on manga.
The worst is how filler or Anime-Original story arc has many types of its direction.
One of anime who have so many fillers episode that somehow expand the character screen time but also ruining tone story that already set up in adaptation story (NARUTO/NARUTO Shippuden and One Piece), and there is also filler story that can cause diverging the story from its source materials completely at the second half, at the end of episode or even for second season (Sousei no Omnyouji, Ao no Exorcist S1, and more).
Gintoki-sensei explaining how filler works which is same goes for Anime-Original Arc without Direct Involvement and Supervisor from Author.
And this was already used by older fans who had already watched Naruto Shippuden, and somehow using this video of Gintama filler guides study as weapons to proves how the anime story arcs which doesn't even added in the manga, even though it's a progression and being recalled in BORUTO Anime are canon to the series and manga as well.

THE REASON WHY BORUTO ANIME AND IT'S ANIME-ORIGINAL ARC IS CANON?
Most people might think and always said that BORUTO Anime Arc is filler, non-canon, and irrelevant to the progression of story, also become forgettable to the fans, however, that is most thing that they didn't know about its anime version of BORUTO and how it works differently than any other anime like NARUTO/NARUTO Shippuden and One Piece.
Since the BORUTO Manga release in monthly format, they didn't have time to explore a deep world-building and developing the characters, and so the anime will focus to expand what manga couldn't with Kodachi as supervisor and the one who directly involved with the anime production. Starting with World-Building development which how we introduced with Hidden Mist Village and Hidden Stone Village, while The Hidden Hand Village already introduced and explored in NARUTO Series.
BORUTO Anime directly involved and Supervise by Ukyo Kodachi.
Ukyo Kodachi, the author of BORUTO Manga and supervisor story for BORUTO Anime |
Ukyo Kodachi is the author of BORUTO Manga, who is also a screenplay for BORUTO -Naruto the Movie- along with Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of NARUTO Manga. While he is doing writing the script for the manga story, he is also directly involving and supervise the story of the anime version which strictly how he even supervised a few stories arcs, including become a screenplay for episode 32.
While the anime has taken an autonomous road with stories parallel to the manga stories, according to Mr. Taguchi at LUCCA Comics 2018, Kodachi responsible for the screenplay of the anime, there are six or seven screenwriters, supervised by Ukyo Kodachi. They create alternative stories and submit them to the Kodachi, and if the strong scenes happen that could dramatically change the characterization of the characters (e.g. if Boruto had to kill someone and also the death of Ohnoki in Mitsuki Arc which is the proof), Kodachi comes into play to monitor everything.
He also said that to prevent the anime to overtake the manga (or so means to be reaching to the manga chapter), the former adds stories parallel to the manga, although the manga and anime follow the same path until they intersect in the same point (That means that Anime will not skip the manga plot).
Ukyo Kodachi regarding about plan for BORUTO Movie and Anime |
The anime is also being planned since before the final battle between Team 7 and Kaguya in Naruto, with the plans for BORUTO -Naruto the Movie- and BORUTO -Naruto Next Generation- anime came into mind which was planned by Masashi Kishimoto and Ukyo Kodachi themselves, which could considered as the World Guides for the series which means as the World-Building to the series, along with expanding the characters development, the stories and more, which is why everything including anime story are canon as well. Even thought anime arcs are not in the manga, but it really considered as a canon story to the BORUTO Series.
Expanding the World-Building that never even showed in the Manga.
Hidden Mist Village in BORUTO |

Not just that, it also shown how much the era had changed since The Fourth Shinobi World War and how it introduced a new system like a new side of rich and poor, also with the existence and development of Scientific Ninja Technology but is how the era had changed thanks to Naruto who worked hard to preserve the peace of the five villages, but that doesn't mean that the peace could last longer.
Expanding the story and character development.
The anime is also expanding the characters that had minimum to none screen time in the manga, while manga version only focused on Team 7, Kawaki, and several important characters in the story arc, but, all characters will get their screen time and spotlight in anime and focus on developing their characters and their story. For example, that Shikadai, Inojin, and Cho-Cho only barely had a little screen time in the manga because of its focused main story plot-only, but the anime could expand their development.
Not just that. It also increased a brand new moment and interaction with other characters, despite that, but the story will also extend much more. One proofs that how it introduces Boruto's Jougan as a new element toward the story which it firstly introduce in the Academy Arc.
Support or Side Character in Anime story is also Canon Character.
Team 5 Iwabe, Denki and Metal |
|
You all might wonder if Denki, Iwabe, Sumire, Wasabi, and Namida are filler character, and if you think, then you are way behind of time or you might not Boruto fans, because they're also a canon character to the Boruto story even only in anime.
If you think they aren't canon, and might you pick a guess because according to Masashi Kishimoto at JUMP FESTA 2017 Interview about his interest when he creates BORUTO Series, There's a lot of character that haven't shown up in BORUTO yet, which he excited to create a drama involving them. We all know that what Kishimoto meant is about Manga, but it includes to the anime, as how his stated Haven't shown up instead Will Show up which heavily confirmed that Denki, Iwabe, Sumire, Wasabi, and Namida are canon characters.
This increasingly proof as Sumire appeared in the Chapter 18 of BORUTO Manga which reveals that she's a canon character to the BORUTO series, her character created by Designer, but the name was come up and supervised by Ukyo Kodachi. Denki Kaminarimon is also mentioned in the Shinobi Secret Column #8: Scienctific Ninja Tools by Ukyo Kodachi which originally published in BORUTO Volume #11 as he was include on top explaination in Advance of Technology Type, according to Kodachi, he was included as the one whose not good at ninjutsu, taijutsu, and genjutsu, but good at Science and Technology.
Tsubaki Kurogane, a new member and first samurai to be a member of Team 15 |
New Team 15 |
While Sumire is in work as Scientific Ninja Research, she placed by Tsubaki Kurogane as the new member of Team 15, despite how their situation differs from how they with Sumire, but it purposely maintain a new dynamic team development for them, while Tsubaki would be a first samurai character to be a member of Team 15, she's also become canon to the Boruto story following Sumire's departure for scientific research team.
But as for now, it's unknown whether they will appear as well in the manga besides Sumire, but we can make sure that they will appear at the time skip story.
Anime Arc is also teasing for what's coming in the manga story adaptation and the future story.
Orochimaru and Log whose curious where the fabrication technology came from if it not from Orochimaru, it seems foreshadowed about KARA |
Sumire who leaving konoha to work on Scientific tools Departement to handling and synergize Nue better. |
Boruto's eyes jougan added to the story materials and how it teases for upcoming future story whether in time skip or next chapter |
Momoshiki and Kinshiki appear in BORUTO Episode 15 which tease for Versus Momoshiki Arc. |
It all connected between Anime and Manga story thanks to the direct involvement and supervising story by Ukyo Kodachi, which there are several fans and viewers who can enjoy the story Boruto not just in the manga but in the anime as well which experience his story more widely.
Extending the Manga story arc with Anime story.
Reintroduce of Mujina Bandit Arc with Anime story materials set the first half in Hozuki Castle Prison |
Anime also provides to extending the story of manga adaptation with a new Original Anime Arc as it allows to expand several parts that become a plot hole in the manga because of monthly format, for example Mujina Bandit Arc expanded with a new first half focus on Hozuki Prison, and a brand-new story arc KARA Actuation will be a very first introduction of their knowledge about KARA's existence while connecting the story with Chapter 16 of BORUTO Manga with introducing anime-original character Deppa the member of Inner KARA organization which would appear in KARA Arc.
Conclusion
BORUTO -Naruto Next Generation- Kara Actuation Arc Key Visual Poster |
BORUTO Anime delivering weekly story episodes so that fans and audience can enjoy while they waiting for the next chapter of its manga version, but people seems mistaking what it means to be filler, because even everything didn't even described in the manga doesn't mean to be non-canon, but simply just to create new room and filling the story while waiting for another manga chapter to be adapted, but usually the other anime can go seasonal like My Hero Academia as the best example.
However, but it's also understandable why filler becoming a common hate, irrelevant, and unnesseccary plot progression to the anime as the people prefer for fully manga adaptation with no interfering, divergence, and the best moments that changed, because how they very respectful toward Manga Author's ability, its newfound uniqueness, better concept, direction story, unique moment, and relevant character progression.
This become known as it is today, however, the anime of BORUTO is legitimately non-filler/canon since Ukyo Kodachi involves with the anime story development, including reference and tease that would lead to the manga arcs when it gets adapted, so it gives more insight development with cast, characters development, screen time, world-building and its depth-story which is also how anime continue to grow, improve, and sometime consistently animated toward so many casts in anime since the manga only focus on the main plot.
BORUTO -Naruto Next Generation- Episode 158: The Man who disappeared will broadcast at 3.30 P.M. on tomorrow Sunday.
So I hope this page will somehow change their minds slowly and steadily while waiting for the next chapter of BORUTO, and as the anime reaches the manga story arc, it would interest for us to enjoy all meat of Boruto content.
So thank you :D
